the benni gig, not lycra

We had a splendid time at the Tracer Trails Farewell to Benni gig, the strings were fighting-fit. I’m wishing Benni all the best for his new life in Iceland. Benni is the main inspiration for me actually getting my act together and writing the string music, it hadn’t really clicked before that I would be able to merge my hitherto dormant PROPER COMPOSER studies into my music (I know, duh) without doing some kind of avant-garde performance requiring screeching and clanking, jumping around in lycra and a dour sit-down audience (and I’m not against that kind of thing, but I just don’t want to do it right now, although, dear reader, I confess I am a fan of lycra, in a Fame-the-series-not-the-film kind of way but that’s another post)… Anyway Benni is a force to be reckoned with in genre-merging of this kind, his music is challenging to the listener and the performer, yet it remains true, emotionally connected, unaffected pop, hurrah!

On rotation this week….. Dirty Projectors and Antony and the Johnsons. The theme is wiggly vocal vibrato, clearly. In my former life as a bassist I used to have to practise vibrato for hours at a time, seems strange now, because it seems just to happen when you sing.

Up next, getting artwork ready for the album, I seem to change my mind about this weekly, so I’m doodling regularly on that, and also a poster for our festival gig.
